Background

Here's what Kevin Martin had to say about her in 1984 .....

"I purchased the mouldings for a Manitou and commenced fitting her out in May 1979. Her name is 'Freesoul" and she is Ketch rigged with a cutter bow, with the addition of a three foot bow sprit. Her main mast is thirty six feet from the deck and mizzen twenty seven feet from the deck. Both hull and deck are white with extensive woodwork in Merbau both inside and out. Ballast is 4,700 lbs. of lead ingots and steel set in resin. She has a 13 h.p. 2 cyl. Volvo diesel MD7A with a two bladed prop; and tiller steered. She carries 30 galls. of diesel in a stainless steel tank under the cockpit, and 50 galls. of water in two moulded tanks under each side of the cockpit, moulded into the hull.

Working sail area is 620 sq. ft.. Other modifications have been made extending the rudder upwards to fill in the gap between rudder and hull. Rubber flaps have been fitted to the end of the keel and flow onto the rudder. A skeg has also been fitted to the canoe stern underneath the water line. All this has been done to aid in downwind performance and stability. It also has a moulded spray dodger of fibreglass over the main companion way with a canvas extension covering front half of the cockpit.

Freesoul is currently moored at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, Eastern Beach, Victoria.

At the moment I am finishing off work commitments in Geelong, before a cruise North for an extended period, and hopefully to stop in Sydney briefly to see the other Manitous and owners. All being well, and if everything goes to plan I should be in Sydney at the end of August '84. "
